Finding the Hope and Strengths In Substance-Exposed Young Families

Featuring: Jayne Singer, PhD

Dr. Singer is a clinical psychologist with extensive experience working with children and families in hospital, school, and community-based settings. She has been with the Boston Children’s Hospital since 1988. Currently, she is the Clinical Director of the Child and Parent Program in the Developmental Medicine Center, where she works with families of children aged birth through early childhood with a wide variety of medical, developmental, emotional, behavioral, and familial challenges.

Dr. Singer has also developed adaptations of the Touchpoints Approach for families living with children with Special Needs, as well as for mental health practitioners. She is the primary author of the Touchpoints in Early Care and Education Reference Guide and the Touchpoints in Reflective Practice guides for practitioners and mentors.

MeAIMH Annual Training Conference Overview

This conference will help participants to understand the challenges faced by the substance-exposed family, and apply relational strategies for families to recognize their strengths and sources of resilience. Collaboration among families and professional partners assists in providing support for children and families and developing connections to community resources. This process will be most effective when communities: (a) create a vision of family strength and resilience and a relational environment that understands developmental and trauma processes, (b) and integrate strategies that support collaboration and deep understanding of children’s behavior; especially when a family system is already stressed by substance exposure.

The Brazelton Touchpoints Approach is a developmental-relational approach that focuses on implementing a set of practices such as sharing careful observa¬tion of children’s behavior and focusing on parents’ strengths to improve parent-provider and parent-child relationships that promote family health and wellness.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to…

• Discuss their implicit biases about substance-using parents
• Describe the effects of substance exposure on the newborn
• Apply an understanding of state-regulation and mutual regulation across early childhood
• Define and explore elements of developmental processes that are key to understanding challenging behavior
• Describe the role of trauma in affecting developmental process
• Apply the Touchpoints strength-based attitude that the parent with Substance Use Disorder is the expert on their child to promote engagement and attachment

Registration is $145.00 for non-members and $130.50 for MeAIMH members and Conference Sponsors. Lunch is included. University of Maine and Psychology CEUs will be available. All participants will receive a certificate for 5.0 contact hours.
